Male sterilization, or vasectomy, is intended as a permanent and definitive contraceptive method. One of the most common procedures at Sf-cliniken is male sterilization. The procedure is performed by a specialist in general surgery and is conducted under local anesthesia as a day surgery.
During sterilization, small incisions are made in the upper part of the scrotum. Through these incisions, the vas deferens (sperm ducts) are cut. The procedure takes about 30 minutes and is simple and safe. Side effects and complications are minimal.
Full contraceptive effectiveness is achieved approximately 10 weeks after the procedure. A sperm sample must be provided 10 weeks post-surgery to confirm the success of the procedure.
In Finland, an application is required for sterilization. If the individual is over 30 years old or has at least three children, a statement from the doctor performing the procedure is sufficient. Before sterilization, the individual must consult a doctor to discuss the procedure, during which an appointment for the surgery will be scheduled.
In Sweden, the minimum age for sterilization is 25. If the individual is younger, an application must be submitted to the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen).
Stop smoking 2–3 weeks before the procedure, as smoking impairs wound healing and increases the risk of infections. To minimize the risk of bleeding, it is recommended to discontinue the use of medications such as NSAIDs, Magnecyl, Treo, Trombyl, vitamin E, and Omega-3 two weeks prior to the procedure. Many herbal remedies can affect blood clotting and may interact with medications used during surgery.
The day before the procedure: Shower and pay special attention to cleanliness in the groin area. Shave the hair around the scrotum.
On the day of the surgery: Shower and wear supportive underwear. Leave all jewelry at home.
