Breast Implant Removal

Breast implant removal is a surgical procedure in which previously placed implants are removed. During the same surgery, new implants can be inserted if desired, or the appearance of the breast can be corrected using other techniques.

Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Implant Removal

Why are breast implants removed?

There are several reasons for removing breast implants. They may no longer suit your body due to aging, weight fluctuations, or hormonal changes. The implants could also be damaged, or you may have developed capsular contracture. Additionally, you may experience bothersome symptoms associated with the implants.

How do I arrange for the procedure?

The decision to proceed with the procedure is always made after a consultation. During the consultation, the need for treatment, your health status, risks, and any potential need for further investigations will be assessed. A possible date for the procedure will also be determined. Finally, an individualized treatment plan will be created, where all aspects of the procedure are agreed upon with the patient.

How is breast implant removal performed

Breast implants can be removed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. If additional reshaping of the breast is performed during the same procedure, general anesthesia is often preferred.

The implant is typically removed through the same incision made during the initial placement. If breast tissue reshaping is performed in addition to implant removal, this will naturally affect the location and number of scars. The procedure is done as a day surgery, meaning you will go home the same day. At Sf-cliniken, breast implant removal is always performed by a specialist in plastic surgery.

What are the post-operative care instructions, and when can I return to daily activities and exercise?

After the surgery, you will receive sports bras that must be worn 24/7 for the first 4 weeks, followed by daytime use for another 4 weeks. Scars should be taped, and sun exposure avoided until they are no longer red. You can shower 4 days after the procedure, and most patients can return to work after about a week. Exercise can typically be resumed 2–3 weeks after surgery, once the skin has healed.
