The abdomen can lose its shape after pregnancy or significant weight loss. When the skin is stretched, it permanently loses some of its natural elasticity and may not return to its original state. In addition to skin stretching, the straight abdominal muscles may separate, resulting in a protruding belly and a skin-fat fold hanging over the lower abdomen. Stretch marks (striae) can also develop as a result of the skin stretching.

Frequently Asked Questions about Abdominoplasty Surgery

What Happens During a Tummy Tuck Procedure?

In a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, excess skin and subcutaneous fat are surgically removed. If the straight abdominal muscles have separated (rectus diastasis), causing functional problems, this can also be corrected during the procedure. The surgery is performed by an experienced general or plastic surgeon as a day surgery under general anesthesia. The surgical approach and goals are discussed in detail with the patient prior to the procedure.

How Do I Arrange for the Procedure?

Before the procedure, you must attend a consultation at Sf-cliniken. During the consultation, your goals, potential complications, and a possible surgery date will be discussed. Additional tests may also be prescribed if necessary. You must bring an up-to-date list of your medications to the consultation. Please note that attending the consultation does not obligate you to undergo surgery.

How Is Recovery After a Tummy Tuck, and What Should Be Considered in Postoperative Care?

You will be discharged on the evening of the procedure day. At the end of the surgery, drains are often placed in the abdomen to remove excess fluid. These are typically removed within a few days, depending on the amount of fluid drainage. Slow wound healing and some discharge are common due to the long incisions, and stitches may sometimes surface. Some patients may experience fluid buildup under the skin (seroma), which can be drained with a needle and syringe if necessary. A compression garment is used postoperatively to help prevent fluid buildup.

The compression garment should be worn for 3–6 weeks. Avoid heavy physical activity and straining for at least two weeks, and refrain from lifting heavy objects for at least a month. Light activities, such as walking, are encouraged to support recovery. The final results of the surgery will become visible after 3–6 months.

Over time, the body undergoes changes due to age, weight fluctuations, and pregnancies. Liposuction is an effective method for removing localized fat deposits and fat cells from areas where fat is difficult to eliminate through weight loss alone.
The number of fat cells increases until about the age of 20 and then remains constant. In adults, no new fat cells are formed, making the results of liposuction permanent—provided there is no significant weight gain after the procedure. However, remaining fat cells can grow larger if weight increases.
The most common areas treated with liposuction include under the chin, abdomen, upper arms, thighs, and the inner knees.

Frequently Asked Questions about liposuction

How does liposuction work on the day of the surgery?

During liposuction, small incisions are made in the skin, and a solution containing local anesthesia is injected into the subcutaneous fat. After the area is numbed, the fat is removed using a thin cannula. Some fat cells are also broken down during the process.

After the procedure, you will need to wear a compression garment, sleeve, stocking, or bandage depending on the area treated. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. Weight gain after liposuction can negatively affect the results. The surgery takes about 1–2 hours depending on the treatment area. At Sf-cliniken, liposuction is performed by our experienced surgeons.

Which areas can be treated with liposuction?

At Sf-cliniken, liposuction can be performed on the neck, arms, abdomen, back, and thighs. Liposuction on the arms and thighs is often combined with arm lift or thigh lift procedures for more comprehensive results.

How do I book the procedure?

Before the surgery, you must attend a consultation at Sf-cliniken. During the consultation, your goals, potential complications, and a possible surgery date will be discussed. Additional tests may be required if necessary. You must bring an updated list of your medications to the consultation.

How should I prepare for the procedure?

Stop smoking 2–3 weeks before the surgery, as smoking impairs wound healing and increases the risk of infections. To reduce the risk of bleeding, discontinue medications such as NSAIDs, Magnecyl, Treo, and Trombyl, as well as vitamin E and Omega-3 supplements, two weeks before the surgery. Many herbal remedies can affect blood clotting and interact with medications used during the surgery. During the consultation, you will receive detailed instructions on how to prepare for and recover from the procedure.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery time varies from person to person. The incision is usually closed with dissolvable stitches, but occasionally stitches that require removal are used. Avoid saunas and swimming pools during the first week or until stitches are removed. After the stitches are taken out, you can begin using silicone cream to promote scar healing. Silicone patches for scar care are also available at pharmacies. Scars should be cared for as long as they remain red.

Recovery after liposuction typically takes about 1–2 weeks, after which most people can return to work. The length of the recovery period depends on the extent of the procedure and the treated area. Bruising may last for 1–2 weeks, and swelling gradually subsides over a few weeks.

At Sf-cliniken, patients most commonly seek treatment for scars on the face or other visible areas, as these are often perceived as bothersome and disruptive to daily life. Scar revision procedures at our clinic are performed by a specialist in plastic surgery. During your consultation with the plastic surgeon, you will learn about different treatment options. We will determine which method is best suited for your specific needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
about Scar Revision Surgery

How is a scar revision performed?

In a scar revision surgery, the old scar is removed, and if necessary, the direction of the scar is adjusted to help it blend more naturally with the skin's folds. After removing the old scar, the skin is sutured, and wound tape is used to prevent the scar from widening. Silicone cream or tape may also be recommended to prevent excessive scar growth. Scar revisions can typically be performed as day surgery under local anesthesia.

How long does it take to recover from a scar revision surgery?

Recovery from scar revision surgery is quick, but during the first few weeks, it’s important to avoid activities that may put pressure on the revised scar. In the initial healing phase, the scar may appear red and raised, but as it heals, it will fade and flatten over time.

Can a scar revision be done on a new scar?

Scar revision surgery should be performed no earlier than about one year after the scar has formed.

What results can be expected from scar revision surgery?

The results of the treatment depend on the initial condition of the scar. The need for revision is individually assessed during a consultation with the plastic surgeon. The doctor will discuss the goals, risks, and realistically achievable results of the procedure with the patient. Based on this discussion, the most suitable treatment method will be decided together.

In most cases, scar revision surgery is successful, but it is important to note that a scar cannot be completely removed surgically. However, the scar can be made less visible. By carefully following post-surgical care instructions, you can achieve the best possible outcome.
