Ultrasound examination during pregnancy

Late pregnancy ultrasound, as the name suggests, is intended for the final weeks of pregnancy (from week 35+0), close to the birth plan assessment. During this exam, the baby's strategic measurements are taken for weight estimation, and the general well-being of the fetus can be checked, including movements, heartbeat, and amniotic fluid levels. The baby's position in the womb (head-down or breech) can also be assessed.
At Sf-cliniken, you can choose to have the pregnancy ultrasound performed by either a midwife or a gynecologist.

When is the mid-pregnancy ultrasound performed?

The mid-pregnancy ultrasound can be performed starting from the 13th week of pregnancy.

When can I see the baby’s gender?

After the 16th week of pregnancy, it is possible to determine the baby's gender, if the fetus is positioned favorably in the uterus for viewing.

Why is the mid-pregnancy ultrasound performed?

The ultrasound is performed to monitor the fetus’s development and assess its well-being. It examines aspects such as the fetus’s general condition, movements, heart rate, and the amount of amniotic fluid.

When is the late pregnancy ultrasound performed?

The late pregnancy ultrasound is typically performed between the 35th and 40th weeks of pregnancy.

Why is the late pregnancy ultrasound performed?

The ultrasound is used to assess the fetus’s growth, well-being, and position (for example, whether the baby is head-down or in a breech position). It is also sometimes used to check if the amount of amniotic fluid is normal.

Is the ultrasound painful?

No, ultrasounds during pregnancy are not painful. They are typically performed through the abdomen and may only feel like light pressure on the examination area. Sometimes the position of the fetus may make the examination more difficult, but it is not painful.
