Early pregnancy ultrasound

An early pregnancy ultrasound can be performed between weeks 6–12 of pregnancy. The examination confirms that the pregnancy is located in the correct place inside the uterus, as well as checks the number of fetuses and the duration of the pregnancy. At Sf-cliniken, you can choose to have the pregnancy ultrasound performed by either a midwife or a gynecologist.

When is an early pregnancy ultrasound performed?

An early pregnancy ultrasound is typically performed between the 6th and 10th week of pregnancy, but it may also be done later, depending on the individual situation and medical needs.

Why is an early pregnancy ultrasound performed?

Ultrasound is used to examine the fetus's development, heart rate, and to ensure that the pregnancy is progressing normally. It can also help confirm that the pregnancy is intrauterine (inside the uterus) and not ectopic (outside the uterus).

Is ultrasound safe during early pregnancy?

Yes, ultrasound is safe. It uses sound waves rather than ionizing radiation like X-rays. Ultrasound has no harmful effects on the mother or the fetus.

Do I need to prepare for the ultrasound in any way?

It is often recommended that the mother drinks plenty of water before the examination, especially if the ultrasound is done through the abdomen, as a full bladder helps provide a better image.

Can I see the fetus’s heartbeat during the ultrasound?

Yes, during an early pregnancy ultrasound, the fetus's heartbeat can often be detected if the pregnancy has progressed far enough (usually around 6-7 weeks).
