There are several types of birthmarks (naevus). Most of them are benign, a few are malignant and some can evolve into cancerous. If there are suspicions that a naevus is malignant or could become malignant with time, it is important to investigate under microscope to correctly diagnose it. There are some factors to insinuate that the naevus is not benign:

  1. Growing in size or pertruding outwards
  2. Increased pigmentation, especially if it has uneven edges
  3. The pigmentation around the naevus, and appearance of the satelites
  4. The inflammatory process in the nevus
  5. Itching
  6. Wounds, bleeding
